Cancer is used as a term for the runaway growth of abnormal cells that can attack other tissue of the body. Cancer cell can reproduce and spread into other parts of the body through the bloodstream and the lymph systems.
Types of Cancer
The type of cancer may be further grouped according to category. The first category of cancer include:
Carcinoma - cancer that starts from the skin or the tissues that line up or cover the interior part of the organs.
Sarcoma - cancer that enters the bone, cartilage, “fat”, muscle, blood vessels other connective or supportive tissues.
Leukemia - cancer that started from “blood-forming tissue” lie the bone marrow that multiplies numerous abnormal blood cells that penetrates the blood stream.
Lymphoma and myeloma - cancer that started from the cells of the immune system.
Central Nervous System that is cancerous – cancer that starts the brain tissues and the of the spinal cord.
Benign tumor is not cancerous. They can be excited, and in most cases, they do not return. Non-cancerous tumors do not spread out to other parts of the body.
Malignant tumors are cancerous. The cells in this type of tumor can penetrate nearby tissues and spread out to other parts of the body. The spread of cancer from one body part to another is referred to as “metastasis”.
The Origin of Cancer
All types of cancer start from body cells, To understand the nature of cancer, it helps to know what happens when normal cells become cancerous cells.
The body is made up of many types of cells. These sells grow, breakdown and multiply in an orderly fashion for healthy body. If the cells are aged and have broken down, they die and are replaced by new cells.
At times, this orderly process goes wrong. The genetic material (DNA) of the cell breakdowns or change, leading to “mutation” that effects the normal growth of cell and its natural division. If this happens, the cell does not die even if they are meant to, leading further to runaway growth. The extra cells can form a mass of tissue called tumor.
Not all tumors will become cancer; tumor can also be benign, or malignant.
